Follow-up Comment #1, task #9674 (project maposmatic):
In Mapnik Core we are going to be experimenting with allowing for a
scale_factor to be passed at rendering time to change things such as line
width, fonts, etc to support higher resolution output.
This of course can be done by modifying the xml in place but that would be
more difficult.
Knowing more about your usecase will help guide mapnik work.
