time, is an anomaly. In my experience, where skews etc are almost always a fact 
of life, more compares return 0 than non-zero.

If the keys are small and fixed-length, co-locating them with the metadata 
would be pretty sweet (and without requiring KEYLEN, one could just use the 
slot). Not sure about the proxy... though it will often come in on the same 
cache line, so its cost is only an optional, extra 4 byte overhead per record. 
What's the API look like? Both of these would be pretty esoteric config knobs, 
unless it came from the serializers.
