Yes, there is work pending on the reducer side. Making the MergeManager
pluggable (MAPREDUCE-4812), the refactoring of MapOuput into an abstract class
and 2 concrete impls MEM & DISK and enabling the local case to use the plugable
MergerManager (this JIRA). The changes in MAPREDUCE-4809 were of visibility
only.
