Thank you for your answers. At the time I installed mapserver 5.2, I didn't manage to compile in AGG support so I left it out. Of course that is then just the feature you need... I'll have to give it a retry.

from version 5.2 AND with AGG output, you can obtain this by setting the
OPACITY keyword at the STYLE level.
