I already use the negative GAP parameter. But, that causes the symbols to be
shown written along the line. The vertical alignment remains untouched.

I tried the OFFSET parameter as well, but I didn't see anything. This is my
symbol definition:

SYMBOL
  NAME 'charup'
  TYPE TRUETYPE
  FONT wingding3
  FILLED true
  ANTIALIAS true
  #CHARACTER '|'
CHARACTER '~'
GAP -40
END

This a part of the mapfile:

CLASS
NAME 'foo'

                STYLE
                        SYMBOL 'charup'

                        #SIZE 120
                        MINSIZE 6
                        MAXSIZE 8
                        OUTLINECOLOR 0 0 255
                        COLOR 122 122 255
                        ANTIALIAS TRUE
                        OFFSET 22 2
                END

                STYLE
                       SYMBOL 'circle'
                       SIZE 10
                       MINSIZE 6
                       MAXSIZE 24
                       COLOR 0 0 255
                END
        END # CLASS
