When you put the map on the layout, be sure to click the checkbox for "Use
Actual Point Sizes".
This will prevent them from scaling.

Another note on large format printing:  don't use hairline line widths
because they practically disappear on large plots.
Also, the last time I checked, transparent filles (eg., hatches) don't work
on pdfs (and many printers).

I have done many D and E size plots from Maptitude to PDFs and to my HP
250C.  It works great!

If you have a lot of maps saved as PDFs you can have a main pdf with
hierarchical bookmarks in it that reference the individual PDFs and thus
build a map library of final map plots.  You can insert the bookmarks by
hand very easily in Acrobat 4.0 or you can do it in an automated way by
creating "run" files (see the Acrobat doc).
