yes you are right, you can set the colors for the selections, but there is
no where to set the default fills. Perhaps Caliper folks have a solution?
The fills they have chosen I always end up changing. - would be nice to
have the choice up front like. Actually it would be nice to be able to set
the default fills for thematic maps as well.

Try edit, preferences, map tab and under selection change
colors to what you want. I don't know about style.
