This happens to me
frequently. I get a file off the USGS or similar (its always in Dangermond
format) and when I try to read it into ArcView it always looks like a squashed
piece of chewing gum because of ESRI's lack of understanding about the shape of
the Earth, but often AV crashes or it won't read in the file. Or it can't figure
out the projection/coordinate system. But amazingly Maptitude does or I can
diddle and get it right in a few minutes (Maptitude can't be expected to have a
crystal ball) , and my state looks like ... my state. And then I can add
other layers without a lot of hassle. Why can Caliper Corp figure out how to
read in a shp file but ESRI can't? (an answer is not required)
