COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
APPLYING GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS TO DEFINE AND SOLVE PUBLIC HEALTH
PROBLEMS
Faculty: Richard Hoskins, PhD, MPH
Time of Course: Mon-Fri, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Cost: $700 (includes copy of Maptitude Software). For State, Local and
Tribal Organization Employees: $500 (includes software)
Course Description: This course will emphasize instruction in how to use
GIS in the real world of public health. The emphasis is on "how to think
with maps" and how a public health practitioner can think geographically
and spatially. We will show you how to do some statistical modeling,
simple statistical descriptions of spatial data as well as make pretty
maps. With software, a public health practitioner with no specialized
training can create geographic analysis and effective maps. Students are
strongly encouraged to have had one or more courses in statistics and
epidemiology as well experience using a statistical software package such
as SAS, SPLUS, SPSS, SYSTAT, Stata, or EpiInfo.
EPIDEMIOLOGY-TOOLS OF THE TRADE
Faculty: Ronald Di Giacomo, VMD, MPH; James Gale, MD, MS; Mark Oberle,
MD, MPH
Time of Course: Mon-Fri, 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Cost: $200
Course Description: This course will focus on several areas in public
health practice where an understanding of epidemiologic methods is
critical in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data on health
and disease. These areas, covered in individual discussion sessions, will
include surveillance, surveys, screening and outbreak investigations. Each
area will be examined in the context of a case study in order to provide
exposure to situations that would actually be encountered. To enhance
relevance, participants are encouraged to submit materials from their work
experience that could be used in conjunction with the case studies.

RS, MSPH; Charles Treser, MPH
Time of Course: Mon-Fri, 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Cost: $200

complex areas of public health practice by using case studies, innovative
practice tools, and a collaborative team approach. Topic areas covered
will include: leading change in organizations; media communication
skills; health policy planning and development; community environmental
health assessment; and bioterrorism.
PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATICS
Faculty: Patrick O'Carroll, MD, MPH; Bryant T. Karras, MD; and Steve
Rauch, MLS
Time of Course: Mon-Fri, 1:30 p.m.-5 p.m.
Cost: $200
Course Description: Informatics is a set of principles and practices that
can help public health professionals harness computers, the Web, and other
information technologies to their work. This course provides a basic
introduction to this new and growing field. Participants will receive
training in informatics principles and concepts, and become familiar with
the appropriate use, deployment, and management of key technologies for
communications, security, data access and information management. The goal
of the course is not to turn participants into computer scientists or
programmers; rather, it is to help them become more effective managers and
users of public health-relevant information technology.
HEALTH PROGRAM PLANNING AND EVALUATION
Faculty: Clarence Spigner, DrPH
Time of Course: Mon-Fri, 1:30 p.m.-5 p.m.
Cost: $200
Course Description: This five-day course is designed as an overview for
those interested in planning and evaluation methods for health services
programs. When things don't go according to plan, it is often because
there never was a plan. The same can be said about how to assess a
program's effectiveness. Topics to be covered in this course include
evaluation designs, measurement and data collection issues, data analysis
and the significance of evaluation results.
PUBLIC HEALTH MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP
Faculty: Jeremy Sappington, MSPH
Time of Course: Mon-Fri, 1:30 p.m.-5 p.m.
Cost: $50 per single session or $200 for all five days

ways to improve the most basic management skills. The four basic skill
