George, Don't quit your day job yet, unless you've got a working spouse!
I was a independent GIS consultant for 22 years specializing PC ARC/INFO and ArcView for 7 years and then Maptitude for the last 10 years. If you go independent you will have the freedom to pick which 16 hours of the day you want to work. Although lots of organizations need and want to use GIS, it's a very tough business to make a living at unless you work with one of the larger consulting firms or are lucky to get a few large contracts (which are very rare). I had it a bit easier because I had database and programming experience and was able to produce a lot of custom mapping applications. But over the years I've seen a lot of people with only geography/gis degrees try to be GIS consultants and fail to build viable consulting practices. Is there much opportunity for freelance or independent-contractor work with Maptitude? Where would one go to find such opportunities? Thanks. Yahoo! Groups Links ------------------------ Yahoo!
