It was a MariaDB 5.1 and MySQL 5.1 limitation. AFAIK, the limitation
was removed in MariaDB 5.5 and MySQL 5.5. See:

There are still user-defined partitioning dangers with sql-mode (see
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/partitioning-limitations.html
