Leaving all that political and emotional stuff (to do or not to do) aside:
What would be relatively easy is to replace the download button the
user clicked on with a donate-button.

Problem arise in how to deal with translations / the styling, etc -
but that can worked out.
Instead of changing the button in the javascript, one could have a
hidden donate button prepared in the page and just toggle visibility
of download and the corresponding donate button.
