Hi all,
During our most recent community meeting (https://etherpad.opensuse.org/p/weeklymeeting20250703), we discussed the direction and potential expansion of news.opensuse.org. One idea that emerged was to gradually evolve the site into something more akin to fedoramagazine.org, which regularly highlights diverse use cases and community-driven content beyond official project news.

While the current README for news.o.o (https://github.com/openSUSE/news-o-o) outlines its role as a platform for official project and distribution-related announcements, it discourages tutorial-style content and articles focused on unofficial repositories. That model has served us well for official communications, but it may restrict the volume and variety of content we could be sharing.

The meeting brought up the topic of us broadening this scope of what news.opensuse.org publishes—without losing its purpose or credibility. Articles and use cases around topics like:

    Design and creative tools

    Gaming on openSUSE

    AI and machine learning workflows

    Office productivity and desktop usage

    Useful tools, extensions, and utilities

    Science and education software

    Movie editing and multimedia

    Cool app showcases and reviews

…are all examples of what could make openSUSE more accessible, especially to new users looking for relatable, real-world inspiration.

A recent community-contributed article draft—"Running a Local LLM with openSUSE" (https://deploy-preview-374--news-o-o-preview.netlify.app/2025/07/04/local-llm-with-opensuse/) by Onuralp—serves as a working example of the type of content we’d like to encourage. We are asking:

Would you support expanding the scope of content on news.opensuse.org?

What rules, limitations, or editorial guidelines should we keep in place?

Should we create a clearer separation between “official” and “community-driven” articles?

What concerns should we consider, especially around quality, promotion or moderation?

Ultimately, the goal is to enrich sharing more openSUSE stories for people who use it every day. If you're interested in contributing content or helping support this, we'd love to hear from you.

Looking forward to any feedback, ideas or replies.
