March 23, 2007 Marine Mammal Coordinator/Observer (Research Specialist- Contributing Level)* #27231 Time-limited through March 31, 2008, with continuation possible pending available funding. Coordinates and participates in monthly aerial surveys to determine marine mammal abundance and distribution off the coast of North Carolina with the purpose of determining their spatial and temporal habitat use patterns. Conducts offshore aerial and vessel surveys for marine mammals, coordinates weather dependent flight schedules with pilot, and provides logistical ground support. Will be responsible for data collection, entry and analysis; generating activity reports; and assisting in final report preparation. Ensures quality control of data collection including recording location of sightings on GPS, photography, and video. Mental concentration and visual attention are essential to comply with research protocol. Must have marine mammal experience, strong data management and photographic skills, and scientific report writing experience. Travel may extend for periods of weeks and will include offshore vessel surveys. Requires graduation from an appropriately accredited four-year college or university; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. . Bachelor's degree in biology and marine mammal survey experience preferred. Additional evidence of offshore vessel skills will be helpful. HIRING SALARY*: $3,000 per month. For employment/re-employment purposes, this vacancy is treated as a grade 70. Duties will include monthly flights to assess marine mammal abundance and distribution off the coast of North Carolina with associated data collection and data entry. Data collection will include recording location of sightings on GPS, photography and video. Must have marine mammal experience, strong data management and photographic skills, and scientific report writing experience. Mental concentration and visual attention are essential to comply with research protocol. Travel may extend for periods of weeks and will include offshore vessel surveys. Requires a combination of training and experience required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Bachelor's degree in biology and marine mammal survey experience preferred.
