You can generate SimPoints for the SPEC benchmark using the tool here - http://cseweb.ucsd.edu/~calder/simpoint/. The SimPoint Tool extracts regions in the program which collectively represents the entire behavior of the program. You can then create checkpointed images for each of the simpoint region. I created about 20 SimPoints of length 250M for each SPEC benchmark. All the simpoints can be run in parallel, and I can get fairly accurate results for a benchmark within an hour.
