Hi Arek,
This problem keeps popping up on the ensembl-dev and mart-dev lists.
In my place, CVS works fine on one server but always gives the "pam" error on
another, and there is no obvious explanation. CVS does work with other
repositories (e.g. cvs.gnu.org).
Have the Sanger admins tried this?

I just checked the cvs checkout and appears to be working correctly.
I note that you are trying to connect to an old cvs server. Try to follow
the instructions from http://www.biomart.org/biomart_website1.html#bio
