Hi Allyson and Sebastien,

In BioMart, dataset being the logical boundary of the query, does print the date/time stamp. Whenever you ask for datasets in a mart, you do get this info in the last column, please have a look at this:

http://www.biomart.org/biomart/martservice?type=datasets&mart=ensembl

I am thinking where would it be beneficial to know update DATE/TIME for a server when a server may host datasets from various locations and have their own update/release cycle. Its more of a dataset property (being more granular) than a global property of a BioMart server.

Hope this helps,
Syed

I would also add that it is useful to know the release of any tool one uses, for later debugging purposes if nothing else. Storing where and when and how you got your information when running automated procedures is very useful to me! :)

thanks!

        Hello Sebastien,

        BioMart's central portal (www.biomart.org
<http://www.biomart.org>) is always on Ensembl's latest
release. You can scan the property 'database' in the following
        registry request:
        http://www.biomart.org/biomart/martservice?type=registry
and the release number is appended at the end. Its fairly
consistent naming convention with Ensembl marts.
Unfortunately, there is no special attribute to print release
info in the registry request, however, will be available from
        next release.

Thanks a lot, it is exactly what I need.

About BioMart's release version, I am

not sure why would a user need this info ? please explain as
this does not seem to affect format of the data sent back from
        BioMart.

It could be useful for automatic processes to know when biomart is
    updated.

        Cheers
        Syed

            Hello,
I use the RESTful access to biomart
            (http://www.biomart.org/martservice.html).

I would like to know if there is a way to get Ensembl and
biomart release numbers via the RESTful access.

            Thanks
