So what actually is homeopathy? It is a way of healing that greatly dilutes the original ailments in water in order to get a cure. It is a form of healing other than the conventional way of medicine. Instead of the drug system, homeopaths think that in order to cure the disease, the person that is sick should take a remedy, the term they use for medicine, of a diluted substance. The substance that is diluted is usually the thing that originally caused the problems. This is all based on the idea that like cures like, a notion invented by the German chemist, Samuel Hahnemann, over 200 years ago. Like cures like means that in order cure a disease a person should be given the thing that causes the disease. The basic idea is to take the substance dilute it in water many times and give it back to the person in order to cure them. The more diluted the solution is the more potent, the more likely to cure the disease. Sometimes homeopathic remedies also dilute different types natural substances in the solutions. The solutions are then put into a sugar pill or kept as water. Part of problem with this way of doing things is that by the time the solution is diluted enough, there is virtually none of the original substance in the solution. To illustrate this one can use this example: a common dilution is 30x or a one to ten solution diluted thirty times, if someone wanted to take that remedy with one drop of the diluted substance in it they would have to drink it out of a container fifty times the size of the earth. The fact that there is none of the diluted chemical left in a solution creates many problems.
So how does homeopathy actually work? There are actually not very many sources that explain this, however there are a few, here is one of them, âHomeopaths believe that it is the energy or âvibrational patternâ of the remedy, rather than the chemical content, that stimulates the healing by activating what Hahnemann called the Vital force. Vital force is the healing power or energy that exists within us all.â Some homeopaths state that homeopathy works on a spiritual not a physical plain. Another explanation homeopaths put forward is that even though there is none of the original diluted chemical left, the water has a memory of the substance and in that way heals the person. The problem with this is that water would also remember other things it had touched including things like pollution and toxic chemicals. If this theory was applied everywhere the process of purifying water would become a lot more complicated because one would have to purify the waterâs memory as well as its actual make-up. Scientifically this explanation does not make any more sense than the previous one. However, despite the faulty explanations, homeopathy still has multitudes of followers.

Homeopathy works on animals is a very common claim that is used to support the idea that homeopathy works better than placebo; in fact that it must therefore work per se. Itâs a false claim though. There are no quality studies that show that homeopathy works in animals at all. This is not surprising as homeopathic remedies consist of nothing but water or sugar pills.

Homeopathic "remedies" are usually harmless, but their associated misbeliefs are not. When people are healthy, it may not matter what they believe. But when serious illness strikes, false beliefs can lead to disaster.
