I would not be too harsh on Lukac's wooden language and thought--in 1949 anything deviating even slightly from Stalin orthodoxy would have put him into the grave beside Lazlo Rajk. But about that one essential question, there is indeed a science which answers that question definitively: ecology. The relation of every living individual to life, the aim and purpose of every life without distinction of species, is to eat and be eaten in submission to the rule of Our Great Common-Cosmic Trogoautoegocrat.
