Logical Empiricism

by Maurice Cornforth

^^^^^
CB: Ralph , thank you much for notifying me of this on your website. Perhaps
unsurprisingly, I found it to be very "helpful". I have read Cornforth's
"In Defense of Philosophy" where he discusses pragmatism and positivism,
analytical philosophy, logical positivism, but this essay is more concise
and clear to me. The feeling of the discussion is like Engels surveying
historical trends. I'll try to do some annotation of it for the list , I
guess. Certainly, for me , the essay will be a heuristic for discussing
Russell and logical positivists, etc.

Importantly for the "history" of Thaxis debates on these issues ( like Andy
A and I debating here this at lennnggggttthhh ), Cornforth makes clear that
it is Marxism that analyzed and "announced" the end of metaphysics and
system building, long before the followers of Russell, lps etc. Since then,
all this philosophizing is post-philosophy philosophy. I always interpreting
Wittgenstein's recant or whatever as a sort of recogniction of this,to W's
credit. W built one of the most respected modern system's and then was smart
enough to recognize that such systems are obsolete, and was courageous
enough to say his was out of date or whatever.

But Thaxians do have the job of making clear what is formal logic and
dialectics, and relating the positive sciences to each other. There is no
more philosophy , but there is Thaxis within Praxis.
