Of course attempts at blending Marxism with various forms of spirituality, whether nontheistic or even theistic are not very new at all. The defeat of the 1905 revolution in Russia was followed by attempts by certain Bolshevik intellectuals like Lunacharski to craft a nontheistic Marxist religion which, it was hoped, would increase the emotional appeal of Marxism to workers, while certain non-Bolshevik Marxists, like Nikolai Berdyaev drifted towards Christianity. Arguably, this trend represented a reaction to the defeat of 1905, and the same phenomena of political defeat followed by turnings toward religion has been repeated many times since. Possibly, Kevin Brien's turning towards Buddhism fits this pattern. I gave my impressions of Kevin Brien's book back on June 18 in this post: www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg03065.html > > At 05:29 PM 9/28/2006 -0400, Charles Brown wrote: > > > >http://news.washcoll.edu/press_releases/2006/06/28_kevinbrien.php > >Marx Meets Buddha as WC Philosophy Professor Explores the Spiritual > >Dimensions of Humanistic Socialism > >Kevin Brien > >Marx, Reason, and the Art of Freedom > > _______________________________________________ Marxism-Thaxis mailing list [email protected] To change your options or unsubscribe go to: http://lists.econ.utah.edu/mailman/listinfo/marxism-thaxis
