McCain: Eats hot dogs, loves ABBA
By Ken Herman | Wednesday, October 17, 2007, 04:07 PM

During a campaign bus swing through South Carolina today, Sen. John McCain
demonstrated his love of hot dogs and declared his love of ABBA. The comments
about the Swedish group came up on the bus as he talked about what’s on his
iPod.

“Dare I say ABBA. Everybody says, ‘Ehhh, ABBA.’ Why is that? ABBA was the
largest selling (recording act ever). Nobody likes them but they sold more
records than anybody in the history of the world, including the Beatles. But
everybody hates them. (But) you’re a no-class guy if you like ABBA. Why does
everybody go see ‘Mamma Mia?’ Hypocrisy! Rank hypocrisy! I’m not embarassed to
say I like ABBA, ‘Dancing Queen.’”

More from McCain. If elected, “the background music would be ABBA in the
elevators all over the White House.”

And even more.

“‘Take a Chance on Me.’ Maybe that’s what we should have as our (campaign)
theme song. That would be good.”

Who doesn´t love ABBA? Mr McCain, we can provide you with ABBA-music to the
elevations in the White House. Best regards Ewa Wigenheim-Westman, Owner of
ABBA the Museum in Stockholm.

I wholeheartedly agree with McCain’s comments. This band is still the most
underrated band in history. There has never been more sublime music to grace
the world, nor will there ever be. Thank God there is going to be a museum to
pay homage to ABBA’s legacy and genius.

ABBA was a Swedish Edison award and
 Eurovision winning pop/dance group active
between 1972 and 1982. The quartet was
formed through the friendship of Benny
Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and also consists
of Anni-Frid Lyngstad (usually known as Frida)
and Agnetha Fältskog. The band members were
at one time married respectively, and together
they have topped the charts worldwide from
the mid-1970s to the early 1980s. The name
"ABBA" is an acronym formed from the first
letters of each of the group member's given name.[1]

ABBA enjoyed immense international popularity
employing catchy song hooks, simple lyrics,
and a Wall of Sound achieved by overdubbing
the female singers' voices in multiple harmonies.
As their popularity grew, they were sought
after to tour Europe, Australia, and North
America, drawing crowds of near-hysterical
fans, notably in Australia during the tour
there. Touring became a contentious issue,
 particularly unpopular with Agnetha, though
they continued to release studio albums to great
commercial success. At the height of their popularity,
however, both marriages of the band members
failed, and the relationship changes were reflected
in their music, as they produced more thoughtful lyrics
with different compositions.

They remain a fixture of radio playlists and are one
of the world's best selling bands, having sold more
than 370 million records world wide;[2][3][4] they
still sell two to three million records a year.[5] ABBA
was also the first pop group from mainland Europe
to enjoy consistent success in the charts of the
English-speaking countries, mainly the United
Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland,
South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
 Their enormous popularity subsequently
opened the doors for other Continental
European acts.[6] The music of ABBA has
been re-arranged into the successful musical
Mamma Mia! that has toured worldwide and is in
production for a movie version to be released in 2008.
