The mass civil rights movement led by King was the main historical actor. Without a doubt Watts, etc played a huge role in changing the national climate. My point: pacifists are part of the front, and sometimes in the forefront. Don't forget this was sparked by a self-immolation. It would be wrong to tell the Egyptians 'don't burn down Mubarak's party hq.' Equally wrong to say violence - even mass violence - is a sign that the conditions are ready for revolution, and jumping in with winter palace dreams. More often it's just a prelude to a massacre. Rosa was right.ey re: I'd never deny the achievement of King and other advocates of non-violence, but those were concessions won with the spectre of something far more frightening looming in the background. That is, the achievements of King and his movement cannot be separated easily from bourgeois fears of Malcolm X, the Panthers and far more militant and menacing black figures. Pushing for serious change always involves of spectrum of ideological and strategic approaches and whatever the movement often can't be clearly ascribed to a single one.
