> after days of dithering, Obama seems hell-bent on military strikes and > more: While that's a possibility, I still have to wonder if the US will do anything in the short term. As it is now, the momentum and military advantage is with Qaddafi. It would take some distinct effort to reverse that situation. The US ruling class needs enemies, and Iraq, Afghanistan and Al Queda are all showing their age and aren't working so well any more. I see a precedent with Saddam Hussein. The US demonized him, bombed him for a decade, and then finally took control and to install a pliant gov't. I have to wonder if they'll repeat, more or less, the same process with Libya. The UN vote opens the door and essentially gives the US the ability to do anything, and at the US' own timing. The idea of whipping Qaddafi up into a bogeyman and milking that for a few years would give the US an enemy and allow the US to take Qaddafi out at its leisure. -- "If this war is so righteous, why don't you send your children?" -- Mother of dead GI Susan Niederer to First Lady Laura Bush (Bush didn't answer). ________________________________________________ Send list submissions to: Marxism@greenhouse.economics.utah.edu Set your options at: http://greenhouse.economics.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
