I think we are missing a couple of points here: Dictatorship or not, the Baathist regime in Syria -- unlike Egypt under Mubbarak -- has been a fairly strong opponent of the "Zionist entity" and supporter of the Palestinian cause. (It will be interesting to see what position the PFLP takes, if they do, on the Syrian revolts; they supported the overthrow of Mubbarak.) For this reason, the U.S. has been waging covert war against the Syrian regime. See this in yesterday's "Washington Post": http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/us-secretly-backed-syrian-opposition-groups-cables-released-by-wikileaks-show/2011/04/14/AF1p9hwD_story.html?hpid=z1 I wish, Gary, that we could lump all these revolts together as one great big Arab Spring Revolution, which deserves our unreserved support in every single case. But I am afraid the reality appears quite a bit more complicated. Be careful what you wish for. Yes, it would be nice to have the proletariat take power in Syria. But what if we get a pro-U.S/pro Israel government?
