At Lenin's tomb, Richard Seymour has written: The criminal justice system is
engaged in a demonstration of the state's ability to control the territory,
because that very ability is just what has recently been in doubt. The
moral and ideological pedagogy behind this disciplining and consumption of
bodies teaches us that the party of order is in control, because its
*claim*to rule hinges considerably on its
*ability* to rule. This is, of course, the hallmark of a very brittle
social order.

My comment: There have been squeaks from the liberals at the sentencing, but
of course they will do nothing other than utter pious moans. The Tories are
in charge and they are acting true to nature. It is very clear that the
riots frightened them and now they are indulging in a festival to *encourager
les autres*.

The medium to long terms effect of all this will be to eat into the
consensus that underpins government in the UK. Richard is quite right here.
Savagery is a sign of weakness not strength. Still the Tory vote will hold
strong and perhpas even grow, but the Liberals will suffer even more.

We are in for a period of acute polarization. Will it politicize the youth?
That is the crucial question for me.

comradely
