I totally concur with the positive things already said about today's
demo at 1 Police Plaza. The phenomenon Fred describes re speakers is
just a spontaneous extension of what goes on in General Assemblies at
Liberty Park: there are layers of human mikes who repeat the speakers'
words for those behind them. At the Park it takes one or two layers,
at the demo today it took many more, and it happened efficiently and
immediately.
The woman Fred describes speaking, Penny Lewis, is a leader of the
Professional Staff Congress, some of whose officials initiated the
action, and who got endorsements from UAW white collar locals and
other labor lefties.
Fred and Louis are also right about our need to be patient and
sensible. I think the example of the kid hanging onto Penny as she
spoke is a perfect example of a possible segue into a comradely
discussion about demands, i.e. when the teachers' aides et al. from DC
372 rally next week, we say to the OWSers, "these workers are trying
to save jobs that service OUR kids, and we know we need many, many
more of such workers! How do we put that into demand form?
"And after all, we know these banks have the money to pay for MILLIONS
more childcare workers and teachers and so on... and some day when we
occupy not the streets in front of them, but the banks themselves,
we'll know exactly how much they've got and we'll decide what to do
with it..."
(that last paragraph would probably have to be saved for the end of a
much longer dialogue... :)
