Louis is right about Strange Times being passing strange, but it's in fact the evolution of the most right-wing of the Maoist fragments in Australia, not Workers Liberty or the like.

It's the project of Albert Langer, his wife (or ex) Kerry Miller and a few others. It used to be called Last Superpower and one or two of its leading lights got a bit of a run in the Murdoch press around the time of the Iraq war, when the local warmongers were searching for an Australian equivalent of Hitchens and the Euston Group to try to confuse the antiwar movement.

I'm not sure if Gary thought "youngmarxist"-David Jackmanson's blog post represented some new form of spontaneism, but it doesn't. Its pedigree is pure Mao-Stalinist, very little changed despite the pointer to the bitter denunciation of the old CPA-ML (of which Langer was a longtime central committee member).

There are many former members and supporters of the CPA-ML who still play a useful role on the left, but the Strange Times crew are not among them.

Bob Gould had a slice of them at the time of the Iraq war:
