While not technically "cartoons" or "comics" the "wordless novels" of Lynd Ward
(1905-1985) and Franz Masereel (1889-1972) in the 20s and 30s were the 20th
century progenitors. Both were leftists and modernists. Their work (and pop
culture in general) was wonderfully satirized by the dean of Yiddish dialect
cartoonists, Milt Gross, in his He Done Her Wrong (1930), a screwball classic.
I strongly recommend seeking out Ward's God's Man (1929) and Masereel's
Passionate Journey (1919) too - all are in print.

The artist for It Rhymes With Lust was Matt Baker, one of the few black
professionals in the comic book field.ey
