This is a pretty weak argument bashing Hanukkah. Ritual male circumcision as "gential mutilation"? Really? I'm glad to have been circumcized. It is a surgical procedure, nothing more. As numerous studies have shown, one's chances of acquiring AIDS is lessened as a result, with no loss in potency or orgasmic sensation. More importantly, the ancient Greeks wanted intact penises forced on everyone because that's what Zeus' organ allegedly looked like. It wasn't about secular Platonic logic, but about forcing another's religion down your throat; the essence of theocratic dictatorship. Not to mention the Seleucids were the occupier and the Jews were the colonized. But I guess since Myerson is a fan of Christopher Hitchens, it must be OK, right? On his blog, Myerson defends the Seleucids as the more civilized since they had the Olympics. So what does that make Nazi Germany (Berlin, 1936)? (Note: Unlike the Seleucids, Alexander the Great exhibited far greater respect for the Jews and did not try to force paganism on them.) Hanukkah, on the other hand, can be made into a useful reminder to the Israelis that they are the new Seleucids and the Palestinians are the Maccabees.
