Excellent suggestions on this thread so far.

Two YA novels where the anti-capitalist themes are not explicit but certainly 
present - they were popular with my home-schooled grandson at that age:

William Golding, *Lord of the Flies* 

Robert Cormier, *The Chocolate War*
