I'm not sure that this is a valid comparison. The Boers were settlers and no more a friend to the African population than the British colonists. However we might view the present state of play in Syria -- and I'm not optimistic about the prospects of a democratic, progressive outcome -- the original upsurge against the Assad dictatorship had a democratic content that was absent in the Boer's rebellion.
