Thousands of Hindu pilgrims visiting the Himalayan shrines in the Northern
state of Uttarakhand were overwhelmed by a flash flood, caused by excessive
rainfall, 30 times the normal in a few hours, with the ensuing wave front about
15 M high. The Hindu shrine of Kedarnath was completely washed out, save the
age old temple. Thousands have perished and many thousands more are stranded.
The Indian army is engaged in rescue operations. Tales of horror and woe are
trickling out, with a few lucky survivors recounting their tribulations of
surviving on rain water. They have seen their dear ones being carried away by
the mud deluge. The tragedy might be because of nature's fury but the
systematic denudation of the precious tree cover over the Himalayas is what had
amplified the disaster.
