The economics department at Harvard has never been very friendly towards Marxists. Paul Sweezy was denied tenure after having returned to teach at Harvard, following the Second World War. In 1974, Sam Bowles and several other leftist economists, were denied tenure there too. Most of them decamped to UMass-Amherst, where they helped to make the economics department there, one of the most progressive in the United States. The only radical economist of note at Harvard is Steve Marglin. But he had still been a mainstream economist at the time that he was granted tenure. I had been a member of the Communist Party as a Harvard undergraduate from 1947 through 1949my main activity was as a leader of the university-recognized John Reed Club devoted to the discussion of Marxism. In 1949 at the time that the American Party was undergoing internal crisis, the situation became so bad that I dropped out of the Party and, as a Harvard graduate student in sociology and Far Eastern languages (19501955), had no connection with it. ____________________________________________________________ 30-second trick for a flat belly This daily 30-second trick BOOSTS your body's #1 fat-burning hormone http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3141/51fbe1fd858f761fd5466st01vuc ________________________________________________ Send list submissions to: Marxism@greenhouse.economics.utah.edu Set your options at: http://greenhouse.economics.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
