Aleppo today is cut in two distinct halves, as was Beirut. Whereas Beirut was divided along confessional lines, social classes separate the two Aleppos. In the East the Free Syrian Army rules over the poor, working-class neighbourhoods; in the West the regime controls the middle class and bourgeois parts of town. Right now, unlike last month, you can find almost everything on the Free Syrian Army side. It’s crazy. From one week to the next, everything changes. There’s a complete blockade between the two sides. People have to go to East Aleppo to get food, but they’re not authorised to carry anything to the West. People try to smuggle food inside pillows, televisions, or loose clothes. Some women pretend that they are pregnant. They do all this for a few kilos of vegetables, meat and bread.
