Thank you, U.S. peace group Friends for a Non-Violent World, for not endorsing pro-regime speakers posing as peace activists. Letter from FNVW to Anti-War Committee, sent via email on Mon, Oct 14, 2013: ------------------------------- To the Anti-War Committee: Thank you for your invitation to support your event. Friends for a NonViolent World (FNVW) is unable to endorse your October 20 event. From FNVW's perspective we believe that your guest speaker does not support FNVW's position statement on Syria (see below). Based on what we know, Dr. Matar Matar and the Syrian American Forum (SAF) are supporters of the Assad regime and are not supporters of nonviolence. From the earliest days of the uprising, the Assad regime has detained, tortured and killed young nonviolent activists. Ten of thousands of nonviolent activists remain in prison, in exile or are dead. To the best of our knowledge the SAF is not involved in any effort to gain the release or guarantee the nonviolent activists safety. FNVW does not support U.S. military intervention and opposes the arming of the various rebel factions by any nation or organization. Additionally, FNVW does call for Russia, Iran and Hezbollah to stop arming and sending troops to support the Assad regime. FNVW has no knowledge that SAF opposes the supplying of arms and troops to all the parties involved in the conflict. FNVW condemns the crimes against humanity committed by both the Assad regime and any and all of the rebel factions. It is FNVW's conviction that all parties who commit crimes against humanity should be held accountable under international law. Based on the facts that FNVW has reviewed, it is FNVW's understanding that the majority of these crimes have been perpetrated by the Assad regime and its allies. FNVW has long supported a diplomatic solution to the conflict and a transitional process leading to a Syria which is nonsectarian, democratic and demonstrates respect for the human rights of all its citizens. Respectfully, Gail Daneker, Director of Peace Education & Advocacy, Friends for a NonViolent World Bob Nechal, Managing Director, Friends for a NonViolent World ======================== FNVW's Syria Principles: FNVW does not support the United States or any other country or organization sending weapons or troops to any of the parties in the Syrian conflict. Many of those engaged in the Syrian people’s freedom movement courageously remain committed to nonviolence in the face of over 2 years of stark brutality and atrocities by the Al-Assad regime. Many in the armed opposition feel they have no other choice, if they are to protect their homes and families. This is all the more reason for nonviolent allies throughout the world to increase our support for a political solution that would help form a transitional government committed to: - human rights - preservation of state institutions - dismantling the security apparatus - a Syria without Bashar Al-Assad - a democratic Syria for all Syrians without any group monopolizing power to impose its own agenda We also call for the release of nonviolent prisoners of conscience unjustly detained in Syrian prisons for exercising their inalienable freedoms of opinion, expression, and assembly. ________________________________________________ Send list submissions to: Marxism@greenhouse.economics.utah.edu Set your options at: http://greenhouse.economics.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
