To be fair, Piketty does not indict wealth inequality as the source of all ills. (He welcomes a large amount of inequality on Horatio Alger grounds.) His main concern is that rentier wealth threatens "democracy."

As for monocausal, it depends on the cause. The capital-labor relation is a good candidate, no?
