Michael Sam Picked by St. Louis Rams in N.F.L. Draft
By THE NEW YORK TIMES
Michael Sam was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round on
Saturday, becoming the first publicly gay player to be drafted by an
N.F.L. team.
As a senior for Missouri, Sam was a first-team all-American and was
named the Associated Press defensive player of the year in the
Southeastern Conference.
Sam went public about his sexual orientation in February. His
declaration produced a mostly positive reaction, but he is now set to
enter uncharted territory, should he make the team, as the first openly
gay athlete in the N.F.L.
Since early February he has been among the most scrutinized players in
predraft workouts.
When he underperformed at the biggest of those auditions, the N.F.L.
combine in late February, he plummeted to the back of the player
rankings. At a public workout a month later, he improved at quantifiable
athletic assessments like the 40-yard dash, his measured vertical leap
and the number of times he bench-pressed 225 pounds, but a survey of
various predraft rankings this week still listed him from 12th to 25th
among defensive ends.
