My sense is that the interviewee has absorbed some Western academic jargon in all likelihood but I would not rule out the possibility that he was using it in the original context, a term introduced by Gramsci to describe lower classes that have not been integrated into the hegemonic system as industrial workers. In other words, the southern Italians who worked as day laborers, street peddlers, etc. It can be said that the Nicaraguan subalterns were the vanguard of the Sandinista revolution. In Muslim society, if the Sunni are hegemonic, the Shia tend to be subaltern (Bahrain); if the Shia are hegemonic, the Sunni tend to be subaltern (Syria).
