While people familiar with NZ working class history will know of the 1951 waterfront lockout in which the National Party government turned the country into a police state for five months, National's assault on the most progressive sections of the organised working class were a continuation of the first Labour government's assault on the working class during and after WW2. Labour's assault culminated in 1949, their last year in power, with the introduction of peacetime conscription and the deregistration of the Auckland carpenters' union and the forcing of carpenters to join the scab union which was backed by Labour.
