Reading about the US shooting down an airplane of Assad calls to mind the way the allied forces on one side and the Soviet Union's forces on the other raced through Germany at the end of WW II. They were allies but competitors also, with each trying to gain control over as much territory as they could before the end of the war came. Isn't that part of what's happening in Syria?
