Scientists challenge Steven Pinker's claim that hunting and gathering societies killed more enemies in warfare proportionately than modern states. But neither side in the argument takes into account the deaths in class societies that take place during "peacetime" like famine or diseases caused because of unsanitary conditions such as Bubonic plague.
