One would have thought the book was titled the third klan, not the

Which begs the question. What the Fuck is the author talking about?
There
is no new wave of klan
Greg, you didn't read the fine print (which was clearer in the other
review I pointed to). The third rise of the Klan was in the 1960's,
particularly in response to the civil rights movement. One of the
author's points is that whereas the first Klan and third Klan were
always marginal movements with limited support, in its second
incarnation the Klan gained widespread popularity and influence because
of (or visa-versa?) its use of social activities and connections to
preachers and politicians. However I would also point to the 1920's as
being fertile ground for the rise of fascist movements following the
Russian revolution and anxiety among small (and large) capitalists,
which lead to their success in some countries but which was
short-circuited in the US by Roosevelt and the rise of the welfare state
(also discussed in the other review).
Of course Greg is right: even with the rise of Trump and the far right,
the KKK itself remains a rather tiny fringe group. However it may be
that the Klan and Nazis are positioning themselves as the vanguard, if
you will, of the far right, hoping to come into leadership as their
constituency becomes disillusioned by Trump (with a Jewish son-in-law!)
who is willing to cooperate with the less extreme republican
establishment. Hopefully we'll never have to find out if that plan is
realistic!
