I agree wholeheartedly with DW on this. The argument against the book has nothing to do with adopting NRA talking points but rather the author’s cherry picking and historical distortions. During the Congressional debates on the reconstruction amendments, republicans repeatedly used the 2nd amendment as a legal basis on which to argue in favor of extending gun rights to freed slaves. The civil war’s emancipation of the Slaves made such revolutionary reinterpretations of the 2A necessary in order to counter newly passed laws in southern states which enabled the klan to disarm freedmen. It is immaterial whether or not such inclusive reinterpretations of the militia were pointless from a military institutional perspective after 1877. There were more pressing matters at hand in the 2nd half of the 1860’s.
