Abandonings and betrayals take place. These are a part of our social and political reality. In particular, the abdication of class politics by traditionally labour-based parties is something that happened. And it left the field open to the racist Right, enabling them to claim the language of class. It did not, as the trope of class abandonment sometimes implies, cause workers to turn racist. But by driving down the political participation of left-wing workers, it enhanced the power of right-wing workers once the latter became mobilised. It gave space to the racist Right that they would not otherwise have had. This is a reality, without which today's dilemmas would be difficult to understand.
