In the late 1800s NZ was called "The little Prussia of the South Pacific" and for good reason. It tried to build a little empire, with its capital in Wellington. Mostly, the NZ ruling class lost out to bigger imperialists in Europe and the USA. But it wasn't for lack of trying. Yet illusions in NZ imperialism remain widespread, even on the left.
