There is a fascinating extended review and interview with Sheila Rowbotham on
SW's website here:

Some really intersting nuggets of history even if you don't have time to read
the whole biography. Particularly interesting is the way that people didn't
"intentify" as gay or straight - brought out in the description of Carpenter's
relationship with a working class man, who suddenly announces he is getting
engaged and invites Carpenter to continue to visit them after their marriage.

I liked this summary of his life too;

"He left behind a privileged life to grow his own vegetables and darn his own
socks, lived with George Merrell though they risked prison, and inspired
thousands of workers with his vision of socialism."

It's seems to be a fascinating work - though it's a shame that Verso are
promoting selling it through the notoriously anti-trade union Amazon.

"Magnificent ... definitive." - Tristram Hunt, Observer

"One of the best political biographies for many years. It is not just a book
about the past; it's bursting with ideas that remain relevant to the future of
humanity."
- Peter Tatchell, Observer Books of the Year

"A powerful and entertaining biography of the 'sexy sage of Sheffield' ... This
absorbing book opens the whole period of early socialism in Britain. And it
reads beautifully."
- Jeanette Winterson, The Times

The first major biography of late Victorian sexual and political libertarian,
Edward Carpenter, by renowned feminist historian, Sheila Rowbotham. A rare
document of the alternative lifestyles and radicalism of Carpenter's times by a
woman who was on the frontline of the left and feminist movements of the
sixties.
