Nope, I think ol' Noam (Chomsky) is a clear cut Libertarian Marxist. His thinking is deeply informed by Marxist theory, his analysis of history clearly proceeds from the accumulation of capital since the ... umh.. 16th century onwards... No, Chomsky is a student of Marx, that is for sure. Now, he claims to be an "Anarchist", albeit one who urges others to vote in US elections. He also seems to have a positive view of European Socail Democracy as it emerged in France, Germany and Sweden (the Rheiner plan ?) Well at least he sees legislation establishing an 8-hour work day, free health care and taxation of the rich as "a show of working class strength". But ol' Noam is always right because he never says anything wrong. He's just too tepid, that's all. On foreign policy he was among the first to point out the major human genocides of the 70s and 80s. With a remarkable intellect, he pointed out : 1) that the Indonesian gov. had killed close to 700 000 people with US help. 2) that the Khmer rouge had killed upwards of 4 million people 3) that the Sudanese cicil war had resulted in the deaths of around 1.3 million people 4) that the Guatamala civil war had resulted in the deaths of 500 000 people 5) that the El Salvador civil war had resulted in the deaths of 100 000 people 6) that the Argentinian gov. had murdreed around 30 000 acticits Noam Chomsky spent the 70s, 80s and 90s openly condemning US imperialism. His Anarchist background allowed him to do so as he was not tied to a Leninist conception of the Party, a bunch of know-it-alls who end up telling workers what to do, whom to fight and whom to obey. ________________________________________________ Send list submissions to: Marxism@lists.econ.utah.edu Set your options at: http://lists.econ.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
