There are three basic types of paramilitary violence being unleashed
against Black Lives Matter protesters at the moment. Police
paramilitaries, which have their roots in the 'war on drugs' and are
thus trained in racial violence, have been rioting since the beginning.
They have shot at, and sometimes killed, numerous protesters (and
journalists). Federal paramilitaries, apparently assembled on an ad hoc
basis by the White House on the flimsy pretext of protecting federal
property, have been kidnapping protesters (that's exactly how the Oregon
Department of Justice characterises it). And, of course, white
vigilantes have been responsible for a number of shootings at the
protests. (Compare with "Antifa", which hasn't been linked to a single
murder over the last twenty-five years.) The militias and vigilantes
have Trump's well-documented sympathy. And according to his current
advisor, John Yoo of 'torture memo' infamy, he could help them by
suspending federal firearms laws.
