Comrades

I am writing a piece on state policy and school attendance. I am using
Texas and the Truancy court especially under Judge Dunn as the clearest
example of the punitive state. I also want to use the LAUSD jurisdiction.
They seemed to have moved from a punitive approach to an attempt to connect
the communities with the school system. My main source is the LAUSD web
site.

It seems to be controlled by progressivists. But I cannot be sure. I am
aware of some of the history of the LAUSD and especially the story of the
South Gate High Five, though I must say I am not overwhelmed with sources
for the struggle. If anyone is up for commenting on what I have written,
suggesting sources, or generally supplying input I would be grateful. I
would very much like to hear from teachers in Texas (!) or the LAUSD or
anywhere else for that matter. Contact me off list if you wish.

My general thesis is that if we treat school absenteeism as truancy i.e. as
a crime then only disaster ensues. But if we see the child/stduent as not
connected to the school or the school as not connected to the community and
we try to connect the school then good things are possible

comradely

Gary
